India’s continuing renewables growth curve will no India’s continuing renewables growth curve will not be determined only by how many panels get installed, but on how intelligently demand, storage, pricing, transmission and dispatch are managed. How’s the Green Energy Corridor coming along, and is it time for battery subsidies?

The second in our three-part series on Energy Transition 2.0 examines the role of storage, pricing and smarter demand in scaling renewable energy beyond today's limits.

Hello and welcome back to Radio 99. You are listen Hello and welcome back to Radio 99. You are listening to Lazy Tunes with G, it is 2 PM on a Sunday and we are softly grooving to Berty Ashley's classic evergreen hit "Let's Str-eight-en it Out!"

Did you know that the musician is also a scientist and sought-after quizmaster? This man with many questionable identities has proven true what they always say, "talent doesn't come in teabags and skills are not just sugar, honey." Who are they? Who knows? But Berty hits the spot when it comes to matters of science, riddling the mind, and songs that brew comfort in the heart. This is the reason why we have a poster for each occasion or avatar of Berty's.

In reality, none of this is true. OK, some of it is. But the way more real, really glaring reality is that half the Sunday is over and we all go back to our work or school tomorrow. *blows a raspberry*

We can hear you screaming. So, this is what we suggest you do to get over it.

Jog your brain by playing our 8th Drawdown Quiz (🔗 in bio), and share your scores in the comments below. 👇🏽 Do this to get those blank neurons firing and then sit down to make to-dos and plans for the week.

Trust me, I am a make-believe radio jockey for an Instagram post, it works. Seriously, just trust me. Link in bio.

(For those of you who thought this was becoming too science-y, Berty listened and has thrown in a few pop themed questions. Here, have a potato 🥔)

The year was 1992. At a SAARC summit in Colombo, S The year was 1992. At a SAARC summit in Colombo, South Asian heads of state commissioned a study on rural poverty. The resulting document, Meeting the Challenges, landed on one core insight: the poor cannot be helped through technocracy alone. They have to be organised. UNDP took this seriously and ran pilots across South Asia. The model that worked best came from Pakistan – Shoaib Sultan Khan’s National Rural Support Program. In India, UNDP chose the three most “backward” districts in Andhra Pradesh, namely Anantapur, Kurnool and Mahbubnagar. The logic was: if it works there, it will work anywhere.

Together they experimented with pre-monsoon dry sowing – pelleted seeds planted before the rains, and the soil covered with mulch. Eleven farmers tried it in 2018 in arid Anantapur. The rainfall was poor, but their fields stayed green. By 2023, 850,000 farmers were using the technique.

Yet, the ₹1.75 lakh crore question remains: Can Andhra Pradesh’s natural farming model transform Indian agriculture? Venky Ramachandran reports.

"I've always been fascinated by the 'smaller' worl "I've always been fascinated by the 'smaller' world, particularly insects. What began as an appreciation of their intricate forms and beauty gradually evolved into a deeper interest in their ecological significance. During this journey, I also discovered the power of data as a storytelling medium.

The key is to simplify without oversimplifying. Climate systems are deeply interconnected, but that doesn't mean every connection has to be presented at once. Breaking complex information into smaller, understandable parts allows people to engage with it more meaningfully."

We notice that the walk to work has become hotter, that it's harder to sleep through warming nights, or that a neighbourhood is losing trees and has too little shade, as a lived reality instead of a chart, number or a global average.

The ticker on VizChitra 2026’s website says that “ The ticker on VizChitra 2026’s website says that “India's Premier Data Visualization Conference” will begin in 15 hours and 14 minutes (as of ten minutes ago). What is the excitement really about?

Making quantitative data more visually accessible and humanly delightful—in all seriousness towards the subject matter at hand—has not seen better days than today, and it seems that the journey has only just begun. The discipline has profoundly blossomed over the last few years, galloping almost, towards our expectations from visual storytelling, reciprocated by the readiness with which journalists, editors, coders, designers, and developers have delivered.

While our consumption of information has grown exponentially and that surely has a giant role to play in this explosion of dataviz, it is also perhaps our taste in graphics-based storytelling that has gotten more refined, especially since COVID (not that the two are strictly correlated). One can trace these inspirations back to pieces such as “Tractors to Delhi: How thousands of farmers marched on Indian capital” by Gurman Bhatia and Anand Katakam for Reuters, published five years ago.

It feels like yesterday that we got excited by short one column-charts in our dailies. Today, we touch a data-point and it takes us through the journey of a human life behind the numbers. Spread over two days from July 3-4 at @bicblr, with close to 40 workshops, seminars, talks, and exhibitions, VizChitra 2026 is a totem representing how far the discipline of dataviz and information design has come in India.

While you buy the tickets for this second edition, we are going to bring you glimpses of the work that some of the artists and visualisers are showcasing at the event. Climate Action Live will be publishing interviews over the following week with some of these practitioners. The photos above are just an entreé.
